India Could See 25% Tariff Relief if It Stops Buying Russian Oil: White House Adviser

The White House Trade Adviser Peter Navarro has stated that India could receive up to a 25% reduction in U.S. tariffs if New Delhi halts purchases of Russian oil. The remarks underline Washington’s efforts to align trade incentives with its geopolitical stance on Russia, while putting India in a delicate position of balancing energy security with diplomatic and trade interests.

This proposal comes at a time when India is already navigating the fallout from steep U.S. tariffs on exports, raising the stakes in bilateral trade negotiations.

The U.S. Offer

Navarro’s comments suggest that tariff relief could be used as leverage to nudge India away from Russian crude imports. The U.S. sees this as part of its broader strategy to curb Moscow’s global oil revenues while deepening strategic alignment with key partners like India.

For India, however, Russian oil remains a cost-effective and flexible supply source, especially amid volatile global energy markets.

India’s Dilemma

Accepting U.S. conditions could ease pressure on India’s exporters, particularly in labour-intensive industries like textiles, gems & jewellery, and leather, which have been hurt by tariffs. Yet, walking away from Russian crude would mean higher import costs, supply uncertainty, and reduced bargaining power with alternative suppliers.

The trade-off highlights India’s challenge: balancing short-term trade gains against long-term energy security priorities.

Policy Perspective

Indian policymakers are expected to weigh the proposal cautiously. While tariff relief could strengthen competitiveness in U.S. markets, energy diversification and resilience remain non-negotiable goals.

Experts note that India may instead push for a dual-track approach—continuing Russian oil imports for energy security while negotiating selective tariff relaxations with Washington to protect export sectors.

Why This Matters

  • For Exporters: Tariff relief could restore competitiveness in the U.S. market.

  • For Energy Policy: Russia remains a key source of affordable oil for India.

  • For Diplomacy: Highlights the complexity of India’s strategic balancing between the U.S. and Russia.

The development underscores how trade and energy policy are increasingly intertwined with geopolitical strategy in India’s global engagements.
